This page will help you if you feel uncertain about which version of Opera to download and install on your computer. If you already know your system well, you can probably go straight to the download page without reading on.
Our download page will automatically detect your platform and suggest a download file.
Computers come in different shapes, sizes, and colors. Though this is generally not something most users concern themselves with, you do need to know a few things before downloading Opera to make sure you get the correct file.
A platform is the computer system on which application programs such as Opera run. Different platforms usually mean different environments, which in turn requires different software designs for each particular platform. Therefore, you need to know on which platform, or operating system, you will be running Opera.
Examples of platforms are BeOS, Linux, Mac, Symbian OS, and Windows.
If you already have Opera, but would like to upgrade, you first have to find out which version of Opera you are using. Go to Help > About Opera in the browser menu. This will display the version number -- the higher the number, the newer the version.
Then go to our download page to see if we have released a newer version for your platform. (You do not have to upgrade if you are already using the latest version.)
We offer Opera in a number of languages. If you already have the newest version of Opera in one language, but would like to add one or more additional languages, you only have to download and install a new language module.
Go to the language files page to get Opera in your native tongue now. Read the language module installation instructions to learn how to install the language modules. Note that some versions have English help files.
Java is a programming language designed for use in the Internet environment, making it possible for a user to interact with a Web page. Java was introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1995.
You can choose between downloading Opera with or without Java. The Java version is approximately 6.5MB larger than the non-Java version, and therefore takes longer to download. Opera does not need Java to run.
You do not have to download the Java version again if you are upgrading from a previous version of Opera with Java.
Downloading Opera from the location nearest you may speed up the downloading process.
