Introduction

Opera for handhelds and mobiles is a full Internet browser that gives you access to any kind of Web site.

This document was last updated for Opera 8.0.

Download Opera 8 for Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003

Please note that this version works with Windows Mobile Smartphone 2003 exclusively, it does not run on Pocket PC or Smartphone 2002.

Installing Opera

  1. Download the .msi file.
  2. Connect the phone to the computer and open ActiveSync if it does not launch automatically.
  3. Double-click the .msi file and follow the instructions from the installer.

Connecting to the Web

If you are already using Pocket Internet Explorer, the following procedure should be unnecessary, but if you are having trouble connecting, please verify that your setup is correct:

  1. From the home screen, select "Start".
  2. Select "Settings" and then "More".
  3. Select "Data Connections".
  4. Select "Menu" and then "Edit Connections".
  5. Select "GPRS Connections".
  6. Select "Menu" and then "Add".
  7. Enter the requested information as follows and select Done:
    • In "Description", enter a suitable name for the connection.
    • In "Connect to", scroll to "Internet".
    • In "Access point", enter the access point information provided by your mobile operator.
  8. Go back to "Data Connections" and make sure the connection you just configured is set as default under "Internet connection".

Normally the information listed under 7. should be sufficient; however, your operator might require that you also fill in the following information:

  • Your user name and password for the GPRS network.
  • The primary domain naming system (DNS) address provided by your operator.
  • The secondary DNS address provided by your operator.
  • The Internet Protocol (IP) address provided by your operator.

These features are also available from the menu.

Open Web Pages

Press 1, then enter a Web address, or access bookmarks and previously visited addresses from the list below the input field. Press "OK" or push the joystick. To return to Opera's home page, select "Go to home page" from the menu.

Display Modes

Full-screen mode

Activate this mode to use the entire screen for browsing. Full-screen mode is off by default, but is easily toggled by pressing *. It can also be selected from the menu.

Fit to screen

Opera's Small-Screen Rendering (SSR) technology reformats Web pages intended for desktop browsing to fit the screen of your device. This mode is on by default, and is toggled by pressing #. If you switch it off, Opera will show Web pages without changing their layout.

Image Display

For faster browsing and lower cost, you may choose to display only images that have already been cached locally by Opera. This setting is changed by pressing 5 or by selecting it from the menu: Menu > Display > Load images.

These are the basic functions you need to navigate:

  • Joystick or up/down key scrolls page up/down.
  • Joystick or right/left key navigates between page elements such as form fields and links.
  • Push the joystick or middle key in to follow links, click buttons, or activate form fields.

Jump to text

Opera automatically skips the headers and graphics on top of Web pages to go directly to the text contents of the page. Press 3 to jump to the top of the page from that (or any other) position on the page.

Multiple Windows

To open or close additional browser windows, go to Menu > Windows. Switch between open windows by pressing 0 and 8, or by using the menu. 9 displays a list of currently open windows. Each window will have the title of the currently displayed document within that window.

Filling in Forms

Press the joystick left/right to move between form elements, and push it in to mark boxes and buttons or activate form fields. Then use the keypad to enter text.

Note: If T9 is activated on your phone, it will be automatically disabled for password fields, but not for other input fields in Web forms.

Bookmarks

The bookmarks are easily accessed from the "Go to" dialog; simply scroll down to the bookmarks folder located above the history list and press the joystick to open the bookmarks.

Go to Menu > Bookmarks to add a new bookmark or manage your existing bookmarks. The bookmark editor lets you organize your bookmarks in folders.

Delete private data

If you share or lend your mobile phone, you may want to erase your history, cache, or cookies. All of these can be cleared by selecting the corresponding entries from the Options menu.
